Costs

  • Class Selection: You do not have to sign up for a class in each time slot. You are welcome to “pick and choose” the classes that will best benefit your family. *PLEASE be aware that some classes may be cancelled if there are not enough students registered in them. If this happens, you will be contacted by email before the class begins.*
  • Volunteer Positions: This is a true cooperative, so everyone is required to work.
  • Unless you’re teaching a BHLC class, you MUST volunteer for 1 task a week.
  • Positions include teacher’s aid, set-up crew, clean-up crew, etc. You will sign up for your volunteer duty when you register. Most tasks take one hour or less. You will be responsible for this position for all 12 weeks of co-op.
  • Class Refunds will only be given for those who move out of Fayette County, have been asked to leave due to behavioral issues, or if a family member becomes ill so as not to allow a return to classes. A five dollar handling fee will be charged, and the reimbursement will only be for time remaining in the semester.
  • Field Trip Refunds will only be given if a cancellation is made by the sign-up deadline of the trip.
  • Scholarships are available on a case by case basis. If your family is in need of a scholarship, please email wendi@my-BHLC.org.

Class Descriptions for Spring 2012: *classes and costs are subject to change*

Mommy & Me

2-4 year olds - $40.00 for the semester

An introduction to music for preschoolers through movement, exporation of melody and rhythm, and finding their singing voices using age appropriate seasonal songs and activities.

About the facilitator: Anna L.

New Foods 101

K-5 - $ 40.00 for the semester

Each class I would introduce an exciting new food, usually a vegetable or fruit, organic if possible.  We will learn a little about the place this food comes from and locate its origin on a map.  We will discuss how far it had to travel to get here and the impact on the environment and how it grows.  We will talk about the benefits of eating this item, the vitamins and nutrients it provides and how your body uses those nutrients. We will then learn how to clean and prepare it (usually raw) and then we will all eat some!

This is a great way to get picky eaters to try new things.  And the kids who have a tried an item get chance to brag about how good it is.  Kids tend to like things that other kids like.

Book Club
- Tom Sawyer
3rd - 6th grade - $ 40.00 for the semester

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

This class will be great for reluctant readers as well as book lovers because we will spend the first 15 or 20 minutes of most classes listening to the book on tape in addition to reading the book outside of class.  We will also have in-class activities and discussions.  There will be a focus on vocabulary as well as on analyses for meaning, themes, and literary techniques.  Even if your child has already read this classic, there will probably be quite a bit for them to gain from the analysis and discussion.  There will be required and optional homework.

Preschool
2-4 year olds - $ 35.00

We will be taking a journey through the alphabet this year using the "AlphaTales" series. These entertaining and silly books, such as "The Lamb Who Loved to Laugh!" each feature a letter of the alphabet and help preschoolers begin to recognize letters and their sounds. For a twist on the traditional idea of "show and tell" the children will have the opportunity to take turns sharing their favorite books from home as it applies to the letter of the week. There will be weekly art projects associated with the letters which will also allow the children to transition to free playtime. Please come enjoy and explore the alphabet with us!    There may be times that the parents will be asked to bring in some supplies or materials.

Psychology
7th grade - up - $ 50.00

This is a continuation of an introduction to psychology.  However, new students are welcome since students will not be expected to have any previous knowledge of the topics discussed or be required to rely on information learned in the fall.   This class will address how psychology examines and explains personality and different personality traits, states of consciousness like sleeping and dreaming, and mental health illnesses and some of the ways psychologists and other mental health professionals treat them.  Note:  There will be short weekly homework assignments in this class in addition to quizzes and tests (study material is provided).  A mid-term and final grade will be given, and students who take the course both terms will get a final yearly grade.

We the People!
K - 2nd grade- $ 45.00

This is a fun introduction to American geography, history and government for grades K-2. We will create lap books so students learn through hands on activities. The class will start with an introduction to the map and flag and progress through the branches of government and the roles of the president, with a lot of fun activities about our holidays and traditions in between.  Puzzles and worksheets will be used as enhancement activities for the students to take home each week.

About the facilitators: Pat R. & Lesley A.

World Religions
7th grade - up - $ 50.00

This course will be an introduction to multiple world religions.  On the first week of class we will define religion, and each student will get to list their preferences for what religions are covered.  The class will focus on the five religions voted highest from the student selections.   During each religion unit, students will have the opportunity to learn about each religions' beliefs, deities, history, traditions, rituals, sacred places and texts, etc.  We will also compare and contrast ideas and beliefs of different religions. (Please note this does not mean compare and contrasting which one students think is "right" or "better" but instead what similarities or differences they have, especially some things many or all may have in common).   At the end of the course, students will have a packet of information and activities to keep and will share the key things they learned.  NOTE:  There will be homework assignments in this class, which will generally include some outside reading or video watching (moderate but not extensive work).

Theatre
Grade 1 & up - $55.00 per semester (This is a MANDATORY 2 semester class)

Everyone who wants a speaking part will get one. However, if you’re new to theatre or a little shy and just want to be in the play but not have a speaking part, that's ok too! Please be aware that your child will have to do a lot of sitting quietly during A LOT of practices.
This is a TWO-semester class. If you join, please be aware that you are making the commitment to take the class in the Spring also. When we get closer to the performance, we will have numerous extra practices, especially during our very hectic last week when we practice almost daily! Every parent is required to join a committee for theatre. Most of the costumes are included in the tuition, as are the cast party, goody bags, and a cast t-shirt.
Outside work: There will be A LOT of practicing music and memorizing lines at home.
